1. Carnival 3rd July - this year is seeing a lot of pre-planning going on in Bognor District, as mentioned given that it is on a Sunday and that the theme we have chosen (a kind of Samba Brazilian Carnival approach) allows for a mask to be worn I see no reason why we can not have a strong Explorer turn out especially Young Leaders who may have been working with their Groups in preparation for the Carnival.
At present it is looking like we have identified some support to teach us how to play the DIY drums and the same support should also be able to supply some drums (the big ones mainly). I plan to arrange some practise sessions later in the year. Noise & colour is the name of the game with drums, chants and movement - think Notting Hill Carnival and your realising my vision. I will at some stage be looking for potential drummers either walking or on the truck that we are borrowing and volunteers to help with some of the creative work to decorate the truck. I have a specific task of creating a large rear display that will boldly announce the company details of the Drum coach. Tessa Shipton may be the person for this but could need support. This will need to be a top job!
2. Kayaks - I have got ever closer to organising Kayak sessions on Chichester Canal thanks to Steve Shipton & the Chichester Canoe Club. Still to be finalised but I hope to start after Easter on Wednesday evenings possibly 6pm - 7pm or 7pm - 8pm. I believe that I have the following interested: Joanna Lampard, Megan Smith, Rachel Farrant, Chloe Beadell, Julia Cowell and I have room for 3 more. (If I have missed anyone that I have spoken to please come back to me ASAP. If we are over subscribed I suspect that everyone will have an opportunity to have a go so no panic at this stage. I would like this to be structured to attain a BCU 2 qualification if possible. This is within the abilities of all of us. Wet suits whilst recommended are not as necessary as when we go on the Sea but the ability to swim 50 metres is a must. Kayaks will be provided. There will be a nominal cost per session of £3 (or less). Please let me know if you are interested to allow me to plan accordingly.
3. Sailing - I have started to plan some sailing activity in conjunction with Oliver Lewis. This is aimed primarily at those who have never sailed but we will need competent helms as well. Whilst this can be seen as a taster it would be good if we could coach you up to a level that would meet an RYA qualification but this will need more time on the water than a couple of days. If I plan a taster then see who wants to come back for more we can tailor the sailing to suit. Please advise me of your interest in sailing and remind me even if you think I know, what your experience to date is. If Martin Jones, Lewis Powell, Cameron Smyth are interested I would appreciate your Feva skills but must stress I want you helping in a coaching capacity. Wet suits are a necessity for this as hypothermia is a risk especially early in the season. If you are interested but have no wet suit they are obtainable cheap at Salisbury's or Neptunes Revenge on the way to Bracklesham. Suitable enclosed sailing boots or beach shoes are a must as well. There is a limited selection of wet suits in the hut (I would recommend a good rinse) plus I have a medium one that can be borrowed. Some kind of splash jacket or even a plastic kangol would be good to minimise wind chill. Full safety instruction and pre-sailing instruction will be given. This will be undertaken in a more constructive manner than some of you experienced in Scouts. But you will have the opportunity to enjoy yourselves and maybe build up to some low level racing. Again please advise me of your interest in sailing. This will be done from Felpham Sailing Club with safety boat present and only in suitable conditions (usually less than a Force 4) so cancellation at the last minute is an unavoidable risk.
Please feedback on the three items listed by email. text or phone.
